COngratulations Gumbo! You got adopted!!

Meet Gumbo!! Gumbo is a six month old purebred Bloodhound. He is easy-going, goofy, and loves to be close and cuddle up. With access to a dog door, Gumbo is potty trained, so that will be useful in his forever home.

Gumbo needs a family that will provide him ample exercise outdoors on walks and hikes, and he is working on his leash etiquette with the use of a gentle leader so he will be prepared for the fun!! He is a VERY smart boy, and needs ongoing mental stimulation so he can exercise his brain too! Gumbo is a very clever boy that catches on to things quickly.
Gumbo gets along well with all dogs, and is submissive and sensitive. While we haven’t cat tested him we are pretty sure he’ll be fine as most Bloodhounds do well with felines. Because he is so emotionally sensitive, he has mild separation anxiety. He will eat in his crate, but long stints being locked up are not good for him. He becomes very sad and despondent.
Bloodhounds are amazing dawgs, with their own challenges. Because of this, Gumbo’s new family should understand the Bloodhound brain.
What will make his extremely happy and successful in the family:
  • allow him to be inside when he wants, including sleeping indoors.
  • love and dote on him
  • make him a part of the family dynamic
  • feed him a high caliber food
  • clean his ears weekly
  • change his water bowl several times a day
  • kind and gentle reinforcement
Gumbo drools and loves to play in water, so if you are grossed out by wet ears, jowls, and drool, you should steer clear of this guy. His water bowl needs to be changed several times a day.
Gumbo will be a very large dog once he finishes growing, with an estimated top weight around 120 pounds. He will need ongoing training to keep potential resource guarding in check, which is a common issue for Bloodhounds. His family will not shout, yell, scream or use any kind of physical punishment. Bloodhounds are incredibly sensitive and this type of treatment can break them emotionally.
If you are interested in adopting a Bloodhound, but have never had one in your life, do some research first. YOU MUST KNOW what you are getting into. This breed can be challenging with their stubborness and nose to the ground antics.
No off leash activity for this guy, as he’ll follow his nose as far as it takes him. But once you commit to this type of dawg, you will find that Bloodhounds have a HEART OF GOLD and are the most wonderful pets. You will never be bored!
Gumbo is currently being fostered in Denver, Colorado. He is up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, and microchipped. His neuter has been pre-scheduled and will be completed prior to his adoption.
