About Lakota

Hi! My name is Lakota and I’m looking for a new kid-free home. I am a 10-year-old female bloodhound, and I love hiking, hugs, and (adult) humans! I’m looking for a companion to spend time with and to give me the attention I need.

My current owners adopted me when I was 3 yrs 9 mos old. They didn’t have children or other pets at that time, and I thrived in my new home! We went for runs, hikes, road trips, dog parks, breweries, and bike rides. It was the best time ever!!! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve slowed down but I still love spending hours outside exploring with my humans. They even trust me off leash.

Unfortunately my humans now have 3 young kids (under 4) and are too busy to give me the attention I need. I’ve taken out my frustration on their 4 yr old and have bitten her on 2 occasions. I have never been aggressive with other humans before, but I just don’t have patience for living with a little human (let alone 3) and have made my unhappiness known in my home.

What Makes Lakota Happy

I am my happiest with frequent exercise and attention. I am a bloodhound so my mind is constantly working. While I am not destructive, I am calculated and sometimes act out when left home alone (like pulling things off the counter, chewing on small/loose items around the house, or climbing on the couch where I’m not allowed). Fortunately I’m crate trained and have no issue taking a nap in there for up to 8 hours while I wait for you to return! I will greet you with a smile and head snuggles whenever you get home.

I’m potty trained and will let you know if I need to go outside before I ever have an accident. I’m spayed and up to date with all of my shots. I tolerate the costumes my humans dress me in and am so curious about the world around me. I greet humans with sniffs and seek ear scratches or treats. I’m indifferent to other dogs and prefer attention from the person holding the leash. I was originally rehomed because I lived with an alpha male dog, and we didn’t get along very well. I’ve never had an issue with any dog since him. I’d prefer that my new family either not have a dog, or have a passive dog that won’t challenge me. I like to think of myself as an alpha female.

My humans send me to doggie daycare and boarding frequently when they travel or when they have long days at work. I always have a great time and come home exhausted. I’ve never lived with a cat but have done in-home boarding with cats on several occasions and never had an issue. I am also a great companion in the car! My current humans frequently drive me to fun places (off-leash dog parks, trails, road-trips, etc) so I get excited for the car.

I can sleep for 20 hours a day, but can also muster the energy for a 3 hour hike! I’ll follow your lead and exercise patterns.

Health Info

My parents have kept me at a healthy weight of 85 lbs which is great for my large frame. I’m on a grain free diet and have been eating Zignature Trout and Salmon for the last 10 years! I had some allergies as a pup (which manifested as skin rashes and regular ear infections) so my original humans put me on a food study.. and zignature worked best for me! I still have an occasional ear infection or rash.. but my parents have special shampoo and skin spray that help keep that at bay. I also have dry eyes, so my mom gives me an OTC eye gel each night to help with that.

More Info!

I know how to sit, stay, lay down, shake, high five, come, and heel. I will respond to the name Lakota or Bubba.

If I do something that upsets you, I’ll typically hide sheepishly in my kennel. I will make goofy faces at you and be extremely playful with you if you want to play. If I’m lonely, I’ll come up to you for pets and attention. I’ll always lay in the kitchen with you while you cook. The only human food my parents give me are fresh produce.. and I loooove garden season!

Favorites:
– activity: hikes
– food: sweet potatoes!
– charity: hugs for bubs (a charity my humans made up for me that is focused solely on hugging me)
– toys: hard plastics, bones, and stuffed animals that I can destuff
– season: all seasons! I love winter for snow and summer for basking in the sun
– memory: bark at the park at Coors Field! I felt like a celebrity with all of the attention humans gave me.

Dislikes:
– fireworks will send me sprinting to my kennel or hiding under a deck. My humans keep me inside when fireworks are around
– living with kids or dogs. I’ll tolerate them but have no interest in sharing/competing for attention regularly with them.
– vet visits.. I get nervous, but am always passive and obedient with the person examining me.
– being left outside for hours. I prefer my human keep me company
– going to the bathroom on a leash! I refuse to do it and my humans let me off leash to go

I’m a very quirky girl that requires a special owner who is patient, firm, and affectionate. Most importantly, I’ll need the attention I’ve been lacking in my current home and an owner who has experience with senior dogs. And in return, you’ll have a goofy, lovable, gentle giant as a roommate and hiking partner.
