Lucia – ADOPTED!!!
Lucia is a sweet, full of life, happy and snuggly tripod pup who brings so much light wherever she goes! Lucia is a special girl hailing from the Yucatan in Mexico! She has transformed from a shy dog who wasn’t used to people paying any attention to her, to a sweet happy dog with so much love of life!
She is a mellow sweet girl who can lay on the couch for hours or by the floor next to you as you work on your laptop (she loves fluffy blankets and comfy beds), but she can also get energized if you pull out a toy and are looking to play. She loves grabbing her toy and running around with it! She also loves her walks and gets so excited to go on out, she just can’t stop wiggling! She also walks very nicely on the leash and is perfect for someone who likes to go on walks, but who can also walk at her pace (standard) and pay attention to if she gets tired. She is also a huge snuggler, either in your lap or next to you! She would sit by the couch, looking up at you to see if she could jump up next to you (or if you would pick her up, if the couch is too high!). She also loves to be brushed and will turn around and give you her back for easy brushing. Coming from Mexico, she wasn’t sure what to make of the snow. After the first hesitation, she ran out into the snow and now loves the fluffy cold! Lucia is also potty trained. As a matter of fact, the day that her leg was amputated, she had already hopped down the stairs to go potty in the yard. She is also very resilient and settles into new routines quickly.
There’s a couple of things to know about being the guardian of a tripod pup:
– She’s doing well with 1/2 hour walks at a regular pace (and time to sniff!), but she’s not a race dog. She couldn’t do long hikes or traverse tricky terrain safely. In these cases, she may need either a cart or an alternative for if she gets tired. Her foster has kept her on a routine of walking on a regular basis to keep her remaining back leg strong and to keep her healthy and not overweight (approx. 29lbs).
– Lucia would need to be either lifted into/out of a vehicle, or would need some kind of ramp. The same is true of really high furniture, as, even jumping down, landing wrong could hurt her legs.
– Get ready to socialize! We found that when walking Lucia, lots of people talk to us.
She is being fostered with other dogs and cats, and was with many other dogs at the rescue in Mexico. She can be shy at first, but warms up quickly.
It is so beautiful to see her happiness and resilience and how she loves life and loves people! Our sweet girl had a very tough start. During her time in Mexico, she was hit by a car. Her “owner” never took her to the vet and her leg healed improperly, causing her to limp in pain and she couldn’t put any weight on that leg. When a good samaritan called a local rescue, they found Lucia in the trash with her puppies. Despite Lucia’s best efforts to keep them alive, they were too weak to survive and were covered in pests. Lucia, herself, was malnourished and could barely walk. The rescue amputated her rear right leg, and Lucia, like the true trooper she is, recovered quickly and already hopped down a few stairs to go potty outside on the same day after her amputation! Lucia’s foster met her in Mexico before her amputation and was there after her amputation too. The amputation was a year ago. She’s travelled such a long way to find her furever home and has all the love to give!
When Lucia was in Mexico after her amputation, she tested positive for heartworms and was treated for it. Didn’t we say resilient? She is spayed and up to date on all her vaccines and is looking for her furever home where she can love and be loved the way she deserves!
